A dirty ventilation system is being blamed for a blaze this evening at a fast food restaurant.

Passersby reported seeing smoke and flames on the roof of the Hardee’s restaurant in the first block of East Mercury Blvd. at 6:34 p.m., said Fire Marshal Anne-Marie Loughran.

When firefighters arrived, they found that the fire was confined to the ventilation system leading to the roof from the kitchen.

The restaurant was safely evacuated and there were no injuries reported.

The blaze was quickly extinguished. “There was a lot of grease up in there that caught fire,” Loughran said.
